Aloha, Colleen Wilcox shares her flamingo art for quilled paper interpretation by Kristen Brunton
Aloha, I am very happy to announce that a quilled piece nearly two years in waiting has finally been finished and met the light of day. When I was new to the gallery scene and the local art scene I was a part of an event in Shelburne Falls called an Art Walk.
I was a bit of an overachiever and I wanted so badly to work on large pieces in my medium of quilled paper. I contacted Colleen Wilcox during July of 2014 asking if I could reproduce her beautiful flamingo piece using long strips of paper that I twist, pinch, pull, push and shape to complete a paper mosaic.
Colleen was quick to respond, and was grateful that her art was inspiring to myself and granted me permission for this one piece. I was ecstatic, and I brought everything I owned to the art walk. It was so hot and I was so ill prepared for this event that an 11×14” image of any kind was ridiculous. I should have made something small and sweet and conquerable. Instead I made a few quilled pieces I glued down to a background of her flamingo piece and I put it away for two years.
About two months ago I reached inside my box of quilled mosaics I never finished. I saw the flamingos and I grabbed them. I immediately ripped off the small bit that I completed that July and I started again. I wanted to take my time. There was no rush and I recently began using some new paper that was a huge help in sectioning out this huge piece.
After over 100 quilling hours and at least a few thousand strips of paper I completed my version of Colleen Wilcox’s beautiful hand painted flamingos.
As many of you know my work time is split between essential oils and quilling… and once the family comes home from their days at school and work I am all theirs. I have had many people ask if I will be selling this piece and the answer is yes. With the time and the paper that went into it I have yet to decide a price yet. The piece itself has to be finished by a UV protectant sealant spray that will bring out the colors in an amazing way.
When this piece, Aloha, does go up for sale it will be listed on Etsy where you can find our other quilled and essential oil products. If you like this piece we encourage you to let us know or favorite our product once it lands on Etsy. Until then you can check out the amazing Colleen Wilcox using the following social media outlets.
Thank you again for all of the emails and the requests for purchase, it means a lot.
